HIV treatment has come a long way in the past 25 years. That's because organizations have made a difference to bring awareness and assistance. The start of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in the mid 1990s changed everything. Today, people with HIV can live long, healthy lives. With HAART, AIDS has become much less common in the United States.

HIV treatment can now focus on:

  • Controlling the virus
  • Dealing with other health problems that can come with living longer with HIV, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Learn more about other health problems experienced by people living with HIV
  • Helping people have the best possible overall health
