Telling your friends

There’s more to know about HIV

Get additional information and support

Many people tell a close friend they have HIV just a few days after finding out. Talking with a friend can be a great source of support. That friend may give you good advice or even teach you something about HIV treatment that you didn't know. Just be sure to choose a friend you trust not to tell others.

Tips for telling friends

Here are some tips to think about when you tell friends:

  • Make sure they know not to tell others
  • Let them know why you are telling them
  • Keep the talk as simple as possible
  • Help them understand that you need their support

Before you bring the topic up, be sure you're prepared. Get valuable information that can help you talk about HIV with your friends. Your local AIDS service organization (ASO) may also be able to give you more tips for telling friends you have HIV.
