My name is David, and I'm affected by HIV because my brother died from an AIDS-related disease. Also, my wifeÑthe woman that I loveÑis HIV+. So I have a personal connection with the virus because people who I love have died and there's people that I'm currently involved Ñmy wifeÑit can't be more intimate than your wifeÑshe's also HIV+.
I co-founded a prison-based HIV awareness program called PACE. PACE stands for Prisoners for AIDS Counseling and Education. At the time, in 1988 and in 1989, it was a time where people were very ignorant about the virus. And then we got a letter from an individual that represented one of the agencies in New York state that just recently started. And this individual said, "Well, if you invite me in and they let me in, I'll come in to talk to you guys."
