Chlamydia

Chlamydia (said: cluh-MID-ee-uh) is an STD that can be passed during vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

What you should know about chlamydia:

  • Symptoms for men and women include a burning feeling when peeing (urinating) and leaking fluid (discharge) from the penis or vagina
  • In women, infection can spread and cause pain in the abdomen and stomach, nausea, and bleeding
  • Many people have no signs or symptoms
  • Chlamydia is treated with antibiotic medicine
  • Chlamydia infection increases the chance of getting or spreading HIV
  • Women who have chlamydia are up to 5 times more likely to get infected with HIV if exposed, compared with women who do not have chlamydia
