Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis (said: suh-ROW-sis) is a liver disease that lasts a long time. In cirrhosis, scar tissue takes the place of normal liver tissue. The liver is not able to work the right way.

What you should know about cirrhosis:

  • It can be caused by:
    • Chronic hepatitis B or hepatitis C
    • Long-term, heavy alcohol drinking
  • When you have it:
    • It can cause bleeding inside your body. It can also cause the abdomen (stomach area) to swell
    • You have a high chance of getting liver cancer
