Depression

Depression is a real medical illness. It can affect your body, mind, and thoughts. People with depression cannot just “snap out of it.” People with HIV often experience depression.

What you should know about depression:

  • Symptoms of depression include:
    • Feeling sad, tired, or hopeless
    • Loss of interest in doing things you normally enjoy
    • Avoiding friends or social activities
    • Not going to work
    • Crying a lot or feeling like crying without knowing why
    • Drinking a lot of alcohol or using street drugs
  • Common treatments for depression include:
    • Talk therapy with a social worker, therapist, or support group to help you talk about how things are going
    • Medicines called antidepressants to lessen symptoms of depression

It is common for people with HIV to have symptoms of depression. Do you know the signs of depression? Answer a list of questions about depression to help determine if you or someone you care about is affected.
