Diarrhea

Having diarrhea (said: dy-uh-REE-uh) means that when you go to the bathroom, your stools (feces) are very loose and watery. And it can happen many times each day.

What you should know about diarrhea:

  • Diarrhea can be caused by a virus, parasite, bacteria, or some medicines
  • If it lasts for more than 1 week, you may need to be tested for infection. Talk with your healthcare provider
  • Treatment depends on what is causing it
  • It is important to drink lots of water to replace the fluids your body is losing
