Genital warts and HPV

Genital warts are a type of STD. They are soft, bumpy growths on the genitals caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). Warts can show up on, in, or close to the penis, vagina, and anus. They can also grow inside a woman's vagina or on her cervix.

What you should know about genital warts:

  • About 3 of every 4 sexually active adults in the United States have been infected with HPV
  • It is spread by skin-to-skin contact
  • Condoms can help lower the chance of getting genital warts, but they do not stop all skin-to-skin contact
  • Genital warts must be treated
    • Skin treatment can be done in a healthcare provider’s office
    • Prescription medicines can be applied at home
  • In women, certain strains of HPV can lead to cancer of the cervix.
  • Vaccines are available for the prevention of certain diseases caused by certain strains of HPV. These vaccines were not tested in patients with HIV.
