Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea (said: GON-uh-REE-uh) is a common STD. It can be passed through the mouth, vagina, penis, or anus.

What you should know about gonorrhea:

  • Symptoms of gonorrhea are generally mild in both men and women. Common symptoms are:
    • A burning feeling when urinating (peeing)
    • Leaking fluids (discharge) from the penis or vagina
    • In men, swollen testicles
    • In women, bleeding between periods
  • Many people have no signs or symptoms
  • Gonorrhea is treated with antibiotic medicine
  • People who have been treated can get the disease again
  • People with gonorrhea are more likely to get HIV or pass HIV to someone else
  • People with HIV can have a hard time getting over gonorrhea because their immune systems are weak
