Hepatitis A

What you should know about hepatitis A:

  • People most likely to get it are:
    • Sexually active gay men
    • People who travel to countries where the virus that causes it is often found
  • Here are ways you can get hepatitis A:
    • Contact with body fluids (blood, semen, and vaginal fluids) of a person who has it
    • Drinking or eating infected water or food
  • Symptoms of hepatitis A include:
    • Having a fever
    • Yellow-looking skin or eyes (jaundice)
    • Feeling sick to your stomach (nausea)
    • Diarrhea
    • Feeling very tired (fatigue)
    • Stomach pain
    • Dark-colored urine
    • Throwing up (vomiting)
    • Not feeling hungry (loss of appetite)
  • You can only get it once
  • Most people recover from it on their own without treatment
  • There is a vaccine for it
