Oral thrush

If you have HIV, you have a higher chance of getting oral thrush. It is an infection of the mouth and tongue.

What you should know about oral thrush:

  • Some things increase the chance of getting oral thrush, such as:
    • Taking antibiotic or steroid medicines
    • Receiving chemotherapy
    • Being old or very young
    • Having diabetes
    • Having a CD4 cell count below 500
  • Symptoms of oral thrush include:
    • White spots in the mouth and on the tongue
    • Red tissue under the white spots. This tissue may bleed
  • Minor infection is treated with tablets and/or liquids
  • Serious infection can spread beyond the mouth. When it does, it is treated with stronger medicines
