Syphilis

Syphilis (said: SIF-uh-liss) is another STD that forms sores on the mouth and genitals. It can be passed during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. It can also be passed by any direct contact with a syphilis sore.

What you should know about syphilis:

  • It should be treated in its early stages. If it is not, it can cause very serious health problems. It can harm the heart and nervous system
  • If treated early, it can be easily cured by taking antibiotic medicine
  • A person cured of syphilis can be infected again
  • A person with syphilis sores has a higher chance of getting HIV than someone who does not have syphilis sores

Ask your healthcare provider about being tested for syphilis. You can have it and not know it.
