Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis (said: TRIK-uh-muh-NY-uh-sis) can be passed during vaginal intercourse. It can also be passed by woman-to-woman genital contact. Sex between 2 men carries a very low risk for the disease.

What you need to know about trichomoniasis:

  • Men usually do not have symptoms
  • Men with symptoms may feel a slight burning when they pee (urinate) or ejaculate
  • Symptoms can be much worse in women, such as:
    • A strong-smelling, yellow-green vaginal discharge
    • Pain when peeing (urinating) or having sex
    • Vaginal itch
    • Pain in the lower abdomen (stomach area)
  • Trichomoniasis can usually be cured with a single dose of prescription medicine
  • Even after successful treatment, you can get it again
  • Compared with women who do not have it, women with trichomoniasis have a greater chance of getting HIV or spreading it to others
