Public assistance

What is it?

Public assistance programs are sponsored by the government. They help people who do not have private health insurance. There are 3 programs:

Medicaid

Medicaid is a state-run program. It is for low-income people who meet certain income limits.

All Medicaid programs help pay for these things:

  • Hospital care
  • Healthcare provider visits
  • Lab tests
  • X-rays
  • Nursing home and home healthcare

Some (but not all) states also help pay for:

  • Prescription medicines
  • Health clinic services
  • Case management (helps guide you through the healthcare system)
  • Dental care

For more information or to find out if you qualify for Medicaid, contact your local AIDS service organization (ASO).

Medicare

  • Hospital costs
  • Nursing care
  • Home health and hospice care
  • Healthcare provider visits
  • Medical equipment and supplies (such as a wheelchair or breathing machine)
  • Prescription medicines
    • All HIV medicines are covered on all Medicare prescription drug plans

  • Outpatient medical and dental care
  • Prescription coverage
  • Help that guides you through the healthcare system (case management)
  • Home health and hospice care

To find out if you qualify for the ADAP or to get more information about benefits offered in your state, contact your local ASO.
